BOROUGH COUNCIL.

AMPLE WATER SUPPLY. The Works Committee of the Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (chairman) and Crs. L. M. Montea'th, J. S. S. Medley, J. Hayden, V. E. Wilson, A. H. Johnstone, W. A. Colli?, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, S. J. Smith,] J T. Mannix, ami A. E. Watkins. ; The engineer (Mr. E. 0. Clayton) reported that he visited the Mangamahoel dam and headwords on Saturday, for the purpose of seeing how the worki recently carried out was standing after' some four weeks' trial under a full head of water, and also to note the .supply of water in the river and stream at the present time, especially when such a long period of dry weather has heen experienced. He added: ''Since December 1 till February 21) (throe months) only 7.150 incites of rain have fallen, and this is the least rainfall that has been experienced for over Hi years for any three months, I found that about onehalf the flow in the river was entering the race, and that about one of this quantity was going over the spillway of the dam. It will therefore be seen that as regards the water supply for motive power and lighting thole is no fear of anv shortage whatever now or in the near future." STREET WORKS. The sub-committee appointed to report on what streets should he attended to first brought down a report. It was decided to refer the report back to the sub-committee to confer with the engineer.
