TEMPORARY SERVICE STARTED, OVER TWO THOUSAND PASSENGERS -VO TRAMS TO MORROW The temporary tram service between' Fitzroy and the town railway station was started at mid-day yesterday, and throughout the afternoon and eVealnr the traffic was very brisk. The peYwit to eonimenee the service was received in the following telegram from the Public Works Department, Wellington:—"Th« Minister ha* received the report at to cars Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and alio the track from Weymouth street and St. Aubyn street to the Waiwakaiho bridge, Fitzroy, a distance of approximately three miles, and the same may be Dow ueed for passenger traffic." It fs understood that some alterations* -hav* to be made before Xo. (1 car can be utilised. Two of tiie smaller types of ears, each ot which carry 32 passengers seated, were employed. The first car left Fit*, roy ai 12.15 p.m. and returned from town at 12.30 p.m. A fifteen minute* service was run until 2 p.m., after which the ears ran every half-hour until 6 p.m., from then a quarter-hour service continuing to 8 p.m. From 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. the time table was a half-hour one. The service wa« closely supervised by Mr. Bartley (the engineer) and Mr Pentecost (the inspector!, and the first day's ruuning gave complete satisfaction. The commencement of the service baa been awaited with interest by the public, and there were few people who, did not patronise the cars. The takings were not available at a late hour last night, but the manager reported tlut the total number of travellers was 24U7, This represents only half a, day's running, and exceeds expectations. Today it is expected that a very large number of people will use the cars, and judging by yesterday's traffic a brill* day should be experienced. ~ To-day the cars will run from 7 a.m. to 11' j »,m., with the fallowing tinetable:—7 a.m. to 9 a.m., quarter-hour service; 9 a.m. to 11 a.M., half-hour; H a.m. to 2 p.m., quarter-hour; 2 p.to, to 5 ■p.m., half-hour; 5 p.m. to Up.a., quarter-hour. It has been, decided not to run the trams to-morrow, and the question of adopting Sunday runatng while the temporary service Is in oper*. Tien will be decided next week, Drivers ef vehicles are requested to observe the by-laws in respect of the trams, and they should pay particular attention when rounding corners. Travellers by the trams should remember that the side on which to board the cars is the left side on the direction in which the cars are, proceeding.
