DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondents.) HURKOUD ROAD. I must tirst apologise to: not sending you a few lines before. We have lately been experiencing a aeries of wet, cold and windy weather, which has told its tale un the milch cows.

All hands an-, bus}' preparing for turnips and other crops at present, and those who depend on letting their ploughing are linding it a difficulty to get their ground cultivated, as it is almost an impossibility to get outside labor this year here. Mr. Jensen, who lias been our factory manager for the last eleven years or so, has resigned and gone to Daleludd to obtain a knowledge of eheeMMmiking. During their stay on Hurfonl road Mr. and Mrs. Jensen made many friend-, and on leaving,.the residents oT the summnding district gathered at the Omata Hal) to bid them farewell. Mr. Hugh Baily, secretary of the Omata Dairy Go., on behalf of the people of the district,' handed Mrs. Jensen a silver tea-pot and Mr. JeiiM'n a travelling rng. Mr. Jensen, in a shoit speech, thanked all for tjieir kindlier and gifts, after which all joined hands and sang "For they are jolly good fellows.'' Dancing was indulged in until the small hours of next morning.

Mr. MeCormiek, of Aramolio, was appointed out of sixteen applicants to succeed Mr. Jensen, and from credentials should prove worthy of the company's choice.

The daily ontput of butter has increased considerably this season, there being twenty boxes manufactured daily, principally owing to the company taken uver the Oakura creamery. The average pay-out for last: season exceeded 14d per lb of butter-fat. and the current >eason should be much higher as higher prices now rule, and the increased supply will cut down working expenses. f have it from good authority that Is 3d per lb tvas obtainable for the company's output until the end oj November, but the directors declined to accept.

Mr. Edgar Ixiveridge left here to go into camp on the 11th inst., and Messrs Rodney Spence and Stanley Wood left on the IStb. Best wishes to them, and may they safely return after accounting for a few FTuns!

All are looking forward now with interest to a basket social to be held inaid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund in the schoolroom at the end of next week, also a farewell social to our local boys when they return home on leave before sailing. f may state that all your subscribers on this road appreciate the arrangements, made for the delivery of the Daily News so early in the morning. When used to the Daily News it becomes a daily need, and in these stirring times the paper is'groatly appreciated.

Mr. Heal lias received word from his son that lie has been wounded in the hand, and, although nothing oOii-ial has come through, he understands he is still on the. peninsula. The subscription list for the Second Hospital Ship amounts to £S4 t)s lid. which brings Tariki close to the .CIDO to date for patriotic purposes, which is a fair quota for this district.
