RIFLE SHOOTING.

NORTH T ARAN A K'T DEFEATS SOUTH TARANAKI. The match between Nfirtli and South Tiiranaki, which was fired at Eltham yesterday, has taken the place of the old Volunteers v. Rifle Clubs match, in which so much interest used to be taken in the .past. The conditions were 20 men a-sidc, ranges 300, 500 and 600 yards, seven shots at each range. The weather, even to use a charitable expression, was wretched, and this accounted for the low scoring, and also for each team firing a man short. The local arrangements were in the capable hands of President Whiting, who was well backed up by some of the Eltham ladies. In spite of the eold wind and rain, Mrs. Narbey, senr., and Mrs. Whiting braved the elements to dispense eatilbles and hot tea. Their efforts in this direction very much appreciated by the marksmen. The markers' work in the trenches, was, under the very trying conditions, also deserving of much praise. President King had charge of the North team, while President Guy filled a like position with the southern men.

The match ended in a win for tlic I northern marksmen by 41 points."' At a meeting of lioth teams subsequently held on the range, it was decided to fire the match next year on March 31. Presidents fitly and Whiting were appointed to make arrangoments for the southern men, and Lieut. Ilartnell and -President King will look after the northern representatives. Following are yesterday's scores:--
