HOCKEY.

TIIJS JIAWER.A TOUKXA'MEXT. ! A GOOD DAY'S PLAY. weather was atrocious for the ladie.-/' liockey .tournament sit Havvera yesterday being very cold, witih numerous liixivy showers. In fact, it was so l)ad at Kaponga. that t'iie ilowil team considered .that tlio tournament would be postponed, and did) not travel until the afternoon, accordingly having to forfeit all their matches 1 . The management liad taken on a big .undertaking in endeavoring to run a tournament comprising 13 entries on the lines that each competitor had to meet all the rest. It meant tha.t, had all Hie teams fulfilled their engagements 78 matches would have had to he played, almost an impossibility in one (lay, when only three grounds were available. As it was, it was only by pushing the games through expeditiously and then curtailing the spelts in the afternoon to' two spells of three minutes each, instead of five minutes, ittat completion was possible. Next year section play will he introduced. The games were all very close, a surprising feature being the number of draws. Indeed, only one -of the four leading teams suffered a loss. This was probably due to the shortness of the spells n&t giving sufficient time for weak, spots to bo found out by the opponents. Some keen games were witnessed, and though the games were played'in a friendly spirit there were several minor Injuries inflicted on player*.

Tlie Tinfeh pnoved decidedly close, Matapu, a first-year club, tieing with Manaia, with. Hawera High &hool and Wiakatika close up. The tie wif.l probably be played off at Hawera next week. Messrs Kemp, Sage, Hurrell, Donaldson, Hisjop and Potter officiated as referees, and thpir deoisions gave no cause for complaint. The tournament was managed by Messrs Donaldson, Catran, .Potter and McDowell (isecretary). The committee could easily do with more helpers, as the secretary had far too much detail work to attend to, rendering Ibis position anything hut an enviable one. However, he kept everything up to date and proved! eminently capable. The results were:, — FIRST ROUND.
