FIRM'S PROFIT AT THE RATE OF ■ £20,000 A "YEAR. A football coupon betting business that was said to bring in profits at the rate of £20,000 a year was investigated at Newcastle last month. George Layton Collins, 41, and Thomas Ohayfor _?0, were charged as principals in conducting a betting establishment. Kiglis ciher men were charged with aiding a/id abetting. Some bets were for considerable sums. but the bulk were in small sums. Counsel added that the bets were all ready money bets. In four months from Sept. 7 to '.Tan. 4 bets were made amounting to £19,470. A sum of £1,782 was paid to agents, and something was put back to those fortunate enough to win, but there was a cleat- gain in Four months of £7,229, or at the rate of £20.000 a year. ; It was stated that among the agents were a number of men prominent in the football world, including a man who was a captain and goalkeeper of ■ a ■ League team. In another case a professional footballer Avon last season £1.020.
One of the defendants was discharged, and the others, including Collins and Chaytor, were committed .for trial.
