Fvtim cur Resident Reporter. METHODIST CHURCH QUARTERLY MEETING. At the meeting of the quarterly board f the Methodist Church there was a ull nttendance of the hoard, the Rev. L. Reader presiding. After devotional xereises a good deal of business was ransacted. The balance-sheet as preented was very satisfactory. Mr. J. V. Boon, superintendent of the Sunday ichool, reported that mr.tters in connexion with the school were very satisfactory. There were 111 on the roll, and he number was increasing. Mr. Camron was appointed to visit the schools ri the district during the quarter. It ras decided to recommend to the .Sunay School teachers' meeting the advisbility of appointing an absentee visitor a connection with the school, and sug- . ;esting Miss Grace Everiss as a suitable ppointment. The Rev. Reader reported vliat the Christian Endeavor Society was having good meetings, and good work was being done. It was decided to ask Miss Clemow to continue her work as envelope steward, members speaking in eulogistic terms of her work. The Rev. Reader and Mr. J. Masters, circuit stew- j nrd, were appointed to confer with the i ladies' guild with reference to the envelope system. The meeting affirmed the desirability of a forward movement in the backblocks of Taranaki, and a copy of this resolution will be forwarded to the Synod at the proper time. A very hearty welcome was extended to the Rev. and Mrs. Reader and family. : Several speakers assured the minister ; that they would render him every assistance in their power, and would endeavor to make his term in Stratford a happy and successful one. Tt was decided to invite the choir to attend a social given by the church, mat- ! ters connected with the choir to be discussed, with a view of rendering assistI ance to the choir. The Rev. Reader and {Messrs. Boon, Thompson, F. W. Cle- ' mow, and R. H. White were appointed a | committee to make arrangements for the social. It was impossible to conclude •the business set down in one night, and the meeting was adjourned sine die. THEFT OF A HORSE. j In the S.M. Court at Stratford yes- > terday, John Harvey, alias Henry Hari greaves, alias Cook; alias Taylor, a I laborer, of Toko, was charged with the theft of a horse, valued" at £5, the property of N. B. Fryday, and a saddle and bridle, the property of Taki Moni, an I employee of Fryday'g. \ Taki Moni, a Maori, employed as a I laborer by Mr. X. B. Fryday, at Omona, I gave evidence that on Tuesday, June 25, I he handed a horse, saddle and bridle to the stableman at the Toko Hotel. The .! horse was Fryday's, but the saddle and ' bridle were his own property. At night j the horse and gear were missing, although he had given no one authority ;. to remove them. The aeciis-ed was at ' Toko that day. He identified the horse, j etc., produced. ) James Rielly, the stableman referred to, also, identified the animal and gear as those that the Maori had left with him. 5 The accused was at Toko that day. Further evidence was' ' given by Nicholas B. Fryday, who identified the horse as his, and stated that' the accused had no authority to take it away. Charles Middlemiss, a Midhirst butcher, gave evidence that the accused had come into his shop on Wednesday, June 2(5. He said he was "hard up," and offered to sell witness the horse, saddle and bridle for £5, saying he had owned the horse for six or seven months. - Witness bought the saddle and bridJe for 17s. That was all the money he,had on him at the time, and- the .accused was quite willing to take it; in fact, the accused pressed him to buy. Accused: Didn't you- tell me the horse was done up, and worth nothing at all? Witness: No; I dqn!i remember, telling you that. The accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Wei- ' lington for sentence. CARD MATCHES. On Thursday evening, at the Egmont Club, the clubmen defeated the Skinner road cribbage team, by three games. position as organist after fourteen years' service. Mr. Kirkman has succeeded him in the office. Judgment was given by default yesterday in the Magistrate's Court in the following cases:—Frank Rhodes (Mr. Spence) v. Percy Fabian, claim £7 12s, -costs £1 10s; K.Z. State Guaranteed Advances Office v. Henry Jakes, claim £8 Bs, costs 8s: James Bain (Mr. Stanford) v. Charles W. Geary, claim £3 5s 4d, costs 10s. The S.M. Court was occupied for some time yesterday with the case of James Baskin (a minor) and L. Raskin (his father) v. Uhlenberg Bros., of Midhirst. This was an action for £35 damages, received for loss incurred by the plaintiffs through the negligence of defendants' servant, Ernest Robertson. After hearing evidence and argument as to the amount of damages, the court awarded the plaintiffs £ls and costs.
