PETROLEUM NEWS.

ACTIVITY AT No. 5 BORE. At noon yesterday the. drill penetrated a very strong gas seam at No. 5 bore. The managers had commenced to deepen this bore on Tuesday, and good progress was made on a papa formation. The formation, however, changed after about twenty feet had been drilled, and until the blow-out took place {he formation was good sandstone. When the gas rein was pierced, water, mud and oil were hurled to the top of the derrick with great violence, and this was continued! up to about four o'clock, when the bore was capped and the oil diverted into the large boiler close at hand. It was noticed that at every blow-out (which occurred every few minutes) the bore cleared itself, while a better showing of oil came away. The depth at which the gas seam was first pierced was 2448 feet, but the staff continued to drill, and at 2455 feet they had to quickly suspend operations and stand by and let the bore flow. Similar results were met with at No. 2 bore at about the same depth, which goes t* prove that there is a large area immediately round these bores that is oil producing. Other companies in course of formation will gladly welcome this further proof of an extensive oil field at Moturoa. Tiiere was a large number of visitors, at the bore 3 during the afternoon, and they were greatly interested in the activity at Xo. 5 well

No 2 and 3 bores are flowing ju3t about tho same as usual.
