STRATFORD POULTRY, PIGEON & CANARY SOCIETY

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. FIRST ANNUAL SHOW. (Prom our resident reporter.) Congratulations to the workers who have so successfully launched 'the Stratford Poultry, Pigeon and Canary (Society s first annual show, which is being continued to-day a „d to-night in the lown Hall. The management is excellent, the "old hands" on the committee watching matters well, and the younger ones bringing to bear all the energy and enthusiasm that is so noticeable In the early stages of poultry shows All the arrangements seemed to be right up to the moment, a fact upon which the secretary, Mr. C. Downey, is to be complimented on behalf of himself and his co-workers. The show was officially opened by the Mayor, Mr. W. P. Kirkwood. Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P./who was to have performed the ceremony, but who is attending to birds of another feather in Wellington, telegraphed his good wishes. It was unfortunate that a number of birds, through the fault of no one in particular but the consignor himself, arrived by train a couple of hours after the judging was finished They were placed on exhibition. The public ire provided with afternoon tea and supper in the supper rooms on the stage.

The judge expressed himself as Loin'" very well pleased with the quality and staging of the exhibits, and says the show compares very favorably with older exhibitions. Conversing with the Daily News reporter, he waxed enthusiastic over the championship classes, the Barred Rocks being the best, in his opinion, that have ever been exhibited in the Dominion. The same remark applies to the White Roeks. The champion barred cock is barred right through to 'the skin, and has splendid reach and depth of body, and fine type. This may also be said of the champion hen. The two are the best two birds he has ever seen benched in the Dominion. The champion cockerel in the White Rocks is a splendid.type of bird, and will be better still as he develops. The hens and pullets are good. Mr. Cullen, of Palmerston North, was very unfortunate, bis white hen having been wrongly entered in the barred section. She would have been runner-up for the championship if correctly entered. Black Orpingtons are not numerous, but are good. The jud"-e places C. L. Bridges ahead of W. Scott this time, being a little doubtful of the comb of the second prize-taker in the adult male class. Some of the Orpingtons in the utility classes should have been in the open class. Oolden Wyandottes are good all round, and the cockerel which wins the special is well striped in hackle, with good color and fluir. The best of a fair lot of White Wyandottes is< a typical cockerel, of good color. In the Silvers, the winning cockerel is fit for the keenest competition in any show, being of good type. well laced on the breast, and showing well defined wing bars. The first prize pullet is a fine upstanding specimen of good type, but fails a little in lacing. The few Partridge Wyandottes shown are good specimens. In Minorcas the judge is well pleased with the winning cockerel, with his excellent type, well serrated comb and dark eye, but his lobes are a trifle hollow. The best pullet is also a good bird. The White Leghorn section contains some good birds. The first and second hens are very hard to separate, and the red ticket goes for better lobes. In cockerels the quality is only moderate. Brown Leghorns form good classes of good birds. The best is the winning cockerel, of grand type, in splendid condition, nicely striped in, hackle, but a little over in comb. Utility classes are well filled, and the type and quality of the exhibits are good. In American Leghorns the best bird is the winning cock, which possesses good type and color and abundance of feather. The pigeon classes contain some good birds. Canaries are scarce. Ducks are not numerous. In the root crop section there .-ire staged about the finest collection'" of swedes ever benched by any one Taranaki grower. Thev are from Mr. Thos. Webb's farm on the Bird road. The points prize in the poultry section goes to Mr. K. T. B. Worthy, of Hawera. and Mr. K. Jones wins 'the special for most points scored by, a Stratford exhibitor.

THE BABY SHOW. All the world and his wife will b e out to-day to see the b:.iby show. Thorn are thirty 'babies, and there is bound to lift keen interest in this part of the exhibition. Needless to say, the poultry judge has nothing to do with this section. A member of the medical profes* sion will have the task of deciding-.whicM mother has the ftnest'baby ih Stratford; and it is hardly likely he will please evetryt one. Judges in baby shows have been mobbed before now by disappointed "fi-rfi tiers." but no demonstration of this kind will be sanctioned by the executive of this show.
