THE SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS. By Telegraph—Presa Associates. Cliristchurch, Last Night. The present scarcity of certificated teachers was discussed by the members at this morning's meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education. Communications on the subject from the Taraniiki and Southland Boards were read. Mr. C. A. C. Hardy said that if it had not been for the faddist ideas of the Department they would not be troubled with the present scarcity of school teachers. The Department seemed to be trying to put obstacles in the way of the board. If the Department had been better managed •in the past the board wjould not be troubled as it was. He moved that the letter should be referred to the appointments committee for consideration and report. Mr. T. W. Adams, in speaking of the work of the Commission, said that he Ihoped that one result would be that many of the objectionable regulations would be withdrawn. The chairman (Mr. M. Dalzicl) said that he doubted whether by applying 10 Great Britain for certificated teachers they would obtain a better class. Mr. W. R. Smith said that commercial pursuits were attracting the best young men and women. He was not in favor of applying to the Old Country for teachers. They should extend the inducements for New Zealand's young people to enter th" profession. The mot : n'i was carried. ;
