Total for two wickets 44 AUSTRALIA v. ESSEX. Received 15, 10.14 p.m. London, May 15. The weather was fine and the attendance moderate, while the wicket was good for the continuation >of the Australians v. Essex match.

Gregory 40 and Mavne 22 resumed to the bowling of Buckenham 'and Mead. The century appeared after 75 minutes' play. The first wicket fell at 134, when Gregory, who had batted for 95 minutes, was easily caught by Buckenham. His runs were made by fine all-round play,: and included six fours. Mayne was dismissed by a good ball five runs later. He hit seven fours, but pave an easy chance when 49. A great stand between Macartney and Bardsley ensued, 362 runs being added for the third wicket.' The batsmen quickly got going. Bardsley was at first not confident, but soon got his eye in. After an hour at the wickets each batsman had reached 50. Macartney gave a chance at 72 and Bardsley one at 51, but they afterwards mastered the bowling. Three hundred was hoisted in 200 minutes, but the next century only took 40 minutes. Macart- | ney was driving superbly, and Bardsley ! pulling and cutting in great style. MacI artney skied Carpenter at 172, but Freeman, in the long-field, miased the catch. The fifth century was knocked up in 45 minutes, but when be had scored 208, and the total stood at 501,' Macartney's brilliant innings was brought to a close by a well-judged catch at long-on. His innings lasted 205 minutes and was a magnificent all-round display. It included two sixes and 24 fours. He gave only one chance really to the hand, and on retiring was loudly cheered. The partnership lasted 195 minutes. Jennings joined' Bardsley, and these two played out time. The Australians' total of 564 was scored in 345 minutes. Scores:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. An extraordinary position has been reached in regard to local cricket. Of five clubs three were to-night disqualified for non-payment of the fees. The delegates thereupon Became ineligible to sit, and the meeting had to be adjourned for want of a quorum. A deadlock is the result.
