EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Hoard was held last ni"ht. Present: Messrs. Jan. Wade (chairman),' G. A. Adlam, ■). Young, W. C, Cargill H. Trimble, W. Rogers, A. H. Halcombej W. L. Kennedy, and A. Morton. ■CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The chairman reported that the various matters referred to him had been attended to as far as he had been able to get the services of the overseer. Hu had been unable to supply the grate for the Lower Mangorei school, or to obtain a suitable stove for the Tongaporntu school. It was found necessary to have a stove placed in the room m the Stratford Technical school for the comfort of the primary class now being conducted there. When the workmen began to remove the debris from the late fire, other office accommodation had to be found for Mr. Tyrer, and the difficulty was got over 'by connecting the telephone with his residence. The matter of moving the shelter shed at Stratford was overlooked at the last nceting of the Board. The foreman being on the ground with his men, the chairman thought it advisable to have the work done to clean the site for the new building. It would be for the Board to consider later on as to whether this should be charged to the Department or not. Mr. Edward Simmons was appointed custodian of t/he Board's offices as from the 13th inst. The matter of calling tenders for the supply of seasoned timber was still held in abeyance,' mi\ it would be necessary for the Board to give further instructions.

Tlip following appointments had been made: Makahu, sole teacher, Miss I. Edwards; Wnitui, sole teacher, Miss J. Fraser; Rowan, sole teacher, Mis* A. Brogiui; Midhirst, temporary assistant, Miss M. Fowler; central, temporary assistant, Mrs. M. Harvey; Hillsborough, temporary assistant, Mia* T. Sutton; Tnglewood, pupil-teacher, Miss N. KerrHislop; Waitara, pupil-teacher, Miss M. Flaming. FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The Finance Committee reported on matters referred to them and arising out of correspondence received since last meeting, as 'follows:— Norfolk.—That the Board will supply the necessary material for spouting and drains for the shelter shed, the committee to do the labor.

Inglewood Technical School.—That the necessary linoleum for the cookery room will be supplied on application to the director. Midhirst.—That the committee be authorised to get half of the dividing fence erected between the residence and Mr. Brown's property, and to have the fence attended to generally.

Warea. —That the bathroom and washhouse will be erected as soon as possible, and the matter of chairs be referred to the inspector. Lincoln.—That the request from the Lincoln committee, for a gate to be supplied, be complied with, the committee to erect it.

Carrinjftou Road.—That the Board supply the necessary material required for fencing and drain pipes, and will subsidise G for £ towards topping ami trimming trees surrounding the ground. Kina.—That the letter of the ltith Inst, from the Kina committee be referred to Mr. Young with power to act. That the Board ennnot see its way to make a grant for the formation of a track and bridges on the Derby road, but has referred the matter to the Publie Works Department. Hillsborough.—That the matter of repairs to the doors and -windows be referred to the chairman with power to act, and the committee be informed that the remainder of their application (sweeping chimneys) is-entirely the committee's work.

Waiongona.—That the application from the Waiongona oommittc for new gates, etc., ho referred to the chairman with power to act. That a couple of wood and coal radiators he procured .for trial in back Mocks schools where there are no fire-piace; that the foreman he empowered to let several of the bathrooms by contract in order to expedite their construction, and that he drnw out plans and estimates for additions to the Norfolk and L'reiini residences, and apply to the Department for a grant. TRUANT INSPECTOR'S REPORT. Mr. A. Hooker, truant inspector, reported that during the quarter ended June 30th he posted fifty notices for nonattendanee, and personally called on a great number of parents and explained the necessity for sending children regularly to school. He had issued 4" summonses for irregular attendance, and had gained 20 convictions. Two cases had been withdrawn, and 16 still remained to he heard. Fines amounted to .C.I 7s. Mr. Hooker drew attention to the need for greater caution being used in the issue of exemption certificates.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION. The organiser, Mr. F. J. Heatlcv, reported: — Stratford.—The first term closed during the month. Continuation classes in Latin, English, mathematics and English are being carried on, and special classes in dressmaking, drawing and book-keep-ing, Of these, dressmaking and bookkeeping will likely run a second term. Of the affiliated classes, the dairy classes at Midhirst and Ngaere have finished their terms. The Toko wool class has also finished its term, ami arrangements have been made to take up a class at Kohuratahi. In view of the now interest in utility poultry it is possible that arrangements may be made to form a class in that subject. Inglmvood.—The book-keeping class ia finished and is not likely to be none on with. This seems a pity. Miss De-mp-sey's class continues to be popular. Negotiations arc in hand for wool classes at Taroita and vicinity, to start ne*l; month. Lectures have been given by Major Young in the neighborhood to farmers. I also had a meeting of farmers and others with a view to forming a dnirywork class. Several names were given in, and the class should be going shortly.

New Plymouth.—The session dosed with the number of students (jiven in mv last report. The different nights for drill cause a difficulty to some would-be students, hence step's have been taken towards having our malo students under IS allotted to a unit connected with the college. The names of those liable to service have .boon forwarded to the area sergeant, so that when the nllnttment takes place our students may be able to drill together at convenient time*.

With regard to tlie onforcuisr of the compulsory attendance at continuation classes, subject to by-laws made by each board to suit its own condition'. T submit a synopsis of the by-laws of various Scottish school honrds, copies of which were lent, by thp Department for perusal. These dcnl chiefly with time and hours of attendance, " exemptions e*c. ' The report was adopted, and the recommendations rcfrardin« compulsory attendance at continuation classes will be. fruitier considered by a committee of the Board.
