AN EXFEiNSTVE FAILURE. London, June 9. Championship sculling races are expensive affairs nowadays. That between Arnst and Barry, wihich took place on the Zambesi, cost the Englishman's supporters £ll7l 13s 7d. This amount does not include the cost of accommodating and feeding Barry and his party during their six weeks' stay in Africa, for they were the gueste of the Goldfields Company. Of the total amount disbursed, £4OO went to the victor, Arnst, for his expenses, Bairry and his trainer received £440 13s 6d, their passages to the Zambesi cost £161; their boats and sculls just over £IOO, insurances £2O Is, and cables and sundries nearly £9O. The subscriptions to the Barry fund with interest thereon and the proceeds of the sale of the boats aggregated £BS 3s lesa the disbursements, so that amount had to be made good by the three guarantors, Messrs Abe Bailey, Otto Beit, and Dr. Sauer. It will be seen that had Arnst beem "ontent with the £3OO expenses foe at first stipulated for, there would haT« been a small balance, but he demanded an extra £IOO, and hence the call on the guarantors. Of the total amount actually collected to enable Barry to make his bid for the championship, the London Sportsman realised no less than £IO2O 7s 2d, other sources only contributing £55 7s lOd . It will be seen from the figures given that the actual cost of training and boating Barry and conveying him to the "field of battle" was not far short of £730, which must surely be a record for a world's champion race.
