A London cablegram reports that the King has contracted a slight cold. Steps have been taken towards the erection of a memorial to the late Father Haire, of Kaponga, and collections are now being received for that purpose. A London cablegram reports that Mr. Swain, of Sydney, has been awarded for the third year uhe 1851 Exhibition scholarship, for researches in gas engines.
The Rev. James Dawson, secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, is to visdt New Plymouth a 4 the end of the month, and wild preach, in the Queen Street Primitive Methodist Church on tihe 30th ins*.
Lord Crewe lias been made Earl of Madelcy and Marquis of Crewe; Lord Loreburn has been made Earl Loreburn; Lord Brassey Viscount Hythe and Earl Brassey, and the Master of Elibaak Viscount Elibank.
Yesterday Dr. T. If. A. VaJint-ino, In-spector-General of Hospitals, accompanied by Mr. C. M. hopper, secretary of the Tara'naki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board', paid an official visit of inspection to the Now Plymouth Hospital and the Old People's Home. Mr. S. C. Owen, M.A, headmaster of the East Ohristchurch School, has been appointed to the .position of Inspector of Schools for the North Canterbury district, rendered vacant tlhrough the retirement of Mr. T. Hughes. There were thirteen applicants for Uhe position.— Press wire.
Mr. James Robert Johnston, one of the first settlers in the Cheltenham district, dropped down dead whilst walking round -the verandah of his house yesterday morning. He was 83 years of age and suffered from a weak heart. Deceased came from Victoria. He landed at Nelson and went to Canterbury, where he was one of Hie original directors of the New Zealand Fanners' Cooperative Association. He came to Cheltenham 20 years ago. He was for sonfe years a member of the Kiwitea County Council. He leaves a grown-up family.
