NEW SOUTH WALES SETTLEMENT. Sydney, July 17. The Utal area taken up in New South Wales in original and additional holdings for the six months totalled 653,701 acres, compared with 885,357 for the corresponding period last year. SCHOOL TEACHERS' UNION. Sydney, July 17. The proposal to form a school teachers' union affiliated to the Trades Hall did not meet with general support, its opponents holding that such action was not necessary. The meeting was adjourned. MARRIAGE ACT AMENDMENT. Sydney, July 17. The Government intends at an early date to introduce an amendment to the Marriage Act making it compulsory, before marriage, to produce a registrar's certificate, to obtain which it is necessary to make a declaration regarding age, and if under age to satisfy the registrar regarding parental permission. The object is to relieve clergymen of responsibility.
