THE RACING COMMISSION. A WESTPORT PROTEST. Westport, Last Night. The Hon. R. McKenzie arrived at Westport yesterday, and in the evening

was interviewed by several deputations): on local matters. 1 To a deputation in protest against the ' Racing Commission's report, he ex- ( pressed sympathy and stated that he - would place their protest before the Minister for Internal Affairs. A member of the deputation stated it was never intended by Parliament that the Commission should deprive a community of • 13,000 people absolutely of its races, yet that was the effect of the Commission's , report. 1

NORTH CANTERBURY'S POSITION, j MR. BUDDO SYMPATHETIC. Christchurcli, Last Night. Deputations waited on the Hon. D. Buddo on Saturday, protesting against the decision of the Racing Commission in respect to the Ohoka Racing Club, the North Canterbury Racing Club and the Waihora Sports Club. Replying to it deputation re the Ohoka Club, the Minister said that he recognised that no complaint had been mado in the district where the club had been in existence for forty years, and there had been do difficulty in regard to the management. The record was <a most satisfactory one. Whatever view one took of the recomI mendations, North Canterbury had more ground for complaint than any other part of tke Dominion, as there were 24,000 people north of Christchurch who had only three single days' racing for racing clubs and one for a steeplechase meeting, and all permits with the exception of that to the Steeplechase Club had been withdrawn. The Commission's finding would come into operation on August Ist, and the matter could only be altered by an Act of Parliament. He thought the club should continue if it thought it hfid the confidence of the public and should apply for a race meeting license in the usual way. Replying to the North Canterbury Club's deputation, the Minister said that while he did not agree with the Commission's finding, he had to carry out the inten-1 tion of the Act, and any alteration would have to he made by an Act of Parliament. However, the future was "in the lap of the gods," and there was no telling what would take place. As to the Waihora Sports Club, he said that not one stipendiary magistrate had recommended a permit for sports clubs. Legislation only provided for racing clubs, and the only thing the committee could do was to form themselves into a racing club and apply for a permit in the usual way. This he knew would be against the desires of the committee, but it was the only way out of the difficulty.
