BURGLARS AT WORK.
AUCKLAND STORES ENTERED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, August 11. Burglaries in Auckland are becoming rather serious, five city stores and offices have been boldly entered during as many days. The last case is that of Messrs John Reid and Co., merchants, Fort street, whose store is situated neai the printing office of Messrs Abel, Dykes and Co. Apparently, on Monday evening, having been disappointed with the result of their attempt to dynamite the Bafe of the-latter firm, the cracksmen proceeded to the roof of Messrs Reid's premises. Removing a small skylight or trapdoor on the Fort street frontage, they descended to the ground floor, where they broke their way into the front office. There they found the firm's valuables were kept in four iron safes. They commenced operations on the largest, one, and removed the cover, to the fceyhole, but findmg an inner slide in the keyhole, which prevented the insertion of dynamite, it is presumed that they reserved their energies for another occasion. They broke open sundry packages and helped themselves to chocolates, indines and cigarettes, taking their with nothing more.
