THE UNITED STATES OF TO-DAY. A vivid picture of the conditions of life in th« United States is painted by I Mr. H. J. Robertson, of Hnrriaburg (Pa.), in a recent letter to the Saturday Roview. We quote the following from this remarkable communication:—The cost of living has been going up by leaps and bounds. All the necessaries of life are in the control of the trusts and combines. We have a trust to control everything, iront milk to honey and from treacle to timber. In every city people who own houses to rent have a combine to keep up the rents. The American is ushered into this world by the doctors' trust, he is fed by the meat trust and the flour trust, his light and heat are supplied by the oil trust and the coal trust, and when ho "shuffles off this mortal coll" he does so by the aid of the drug trust, and finally is buried by the coliin trust. Our. papers arc prompt at directing attention to the tyranny of the Czar of Russia, but when the Governor of Nevada calls for troops to shoot down peaceful strikers at Goldfield (Nevada) they have not a word to say in condemnation.

These trust-controlled papers are very fond of giving advice to foreign Governments as to ][Ow to deal with the unemployed masses. They arc now in a position where they can take some. Starvation is staring the masses in the faoe. The organised charitable institutions are utterly inadequate to deal with the situation already. The depre?. sion that began in 1893 lasted through 1894 and 1805 and 1896. If the trusts, as they did in' 1803, leave the people to starve until the products iu the storebouse have been used up or destroyed they will find themselves confronted by a political crisis as well as an industrial one. It was the depression of 1894, 1895, and 1896 that started the Socialist agitation in this country. If the depression detinues the Socialist propaganda will sweep the country like a prairie fire.
