Town Band Concert.

The first of a series of concerts arranged to be given by tho New Plymouth Town Band took place in the Theatre Royal lost night. There was not a large attendance of the public, probably due to the short notice given and to the generally uccepted idea that connects a band concert with tho clang and blare of drum and trumpet. Any who attended last night's concert would have had that delusion ins-Lantly dispelled for the items rendered by the uand were soft and harmonious, the effect being much subdued 'by the predominance of reed instruments. Mi' Geo. Garry conducted tho band, whose iteuis were tunefully rendered, and well recoivod. Tho programme was above the usual plane. The vocal items were two songs each given by Miss Murphy and Mr E. Clarke. The former was heard to the best advantage in "Till Death," with accompaniment by a quintette (violin, clarionet, cornet, 'cello and bass). " A May Morning" was her second item. Sir Clarke sang "My Life lor The" very effectively in the first part of tho evening, and was ecpj-ally successful in his second oltort. A duel,

' Sainted Mother," iby Messrs George Gariy and S. Cottier, u trio, " O Mumorj," by Mr George Garry and Masters Bert and Jack Garry' was splendidly played, touch and sympathy being exquisite. Mr Jack Garry's violin solo was a treat Taken altogether the concert was one that was well worth attending, and it will be surprising if the remainder of tho scries fail to attract good houses.
