THE LATE COUNCILLOR

HAMPSON.

CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION

Reeling reference was made at last night s meeting of the Oitv Council to the death cf the late Or. W. S. Ham* son.

The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. T. Pottit). in moving that a vote of sympathy be passed to the relatives of the deceased councillor and that the Council's appreciation of the services rendered by him to the city be placed on record^ said that he had sat with the late Cr. Hampson for a very considerable time, and h© had been a very useful councillor. He had devoted a great deal of time and brought to bear a great deat~«f talent on many points, especially in regard to nance. He said it would not be necessary to refer further to the merits of their departed friend, who Ttad been • a councillor for 13 years, and h© moved the resolution.

This was seconded by Cr. Stiinger. By permission the Town Cterk read the following communication from the Mayor, who was absent owing to illness : —

* "I regret very much that I am unable ;to be present with you to-night. I desire to join with you in expressing sympathy with Mrs Hampson and family in "the sudden sad loss they have "sus- : tamed -by the death of our dear old {friend and colleague, the late Councilor William Spencer Hampson. Since Mr Hampson's arrival in Nelson many years ago he had taken a very great interest in every movement having for its object the progress of Nelson and district. 'He was a man of large experience, of great ability, and of an optimistic nature, with whom it has always been a pleasure to work. As a city councillor his store of knowledge— practical, theoretical, and financial— gathered in many of the cities of the ■world, was always readily and fully used ifor the benefit of the* city, and I am sure that I can never hope to have a better councillor and friend in any, place or under any circumstances, a* Mayor of the City of Nelson." Speaking to the motion, Cr. Edwards, as a junior arancillor, acknowledged the ready help ho had always received from the late Cr. Hampson. In his opinion tliey ~ad lost a valuable servant in municipal affairs. Cr. Marris also expressed regret at the death of the. late.Or. Hampson, who had been a really good councillor. The ratepayers had repeatedly shown fheir confidence in him, and, in his opinion, ihe would, if he had lived, been returned as often as he chose to offer his services. ,

The motion was then put and carried, councillors standing, and the Council adjourned until next Friday evening.
