TO CHECK LAND SPECULATION.

It was suggested to the Prime Minister by Mr Horns'by, as one way of checking the tendency to inflated land values, that instructions should be given to the head of the Valuation Department that m cverv instance where a farm property changed hands at an advanced price the property should be valued for taxation purposes ffii the advanced price. Mr Massey agreed that something should be done to discourage large speculators. He had discussed the point mentioned with the head of the department, who assured him that he took no notice of extreme prices, because he believed it was not In the interests of the, country to take individual high prices, but rather tho general values. Mr Massey added thatlie agreed with in'e head of'the department.
