SINKING A RAIDER.

This raider, it is now known, commissioned as the German cruiser Leopard^ was no other tiian the British steamer iarrowdale, captured by the German raider Moewe in December, 1916, and fitted out m Germany for service as a raider. j Admiral Sir David Beatty, in a despatch transmitting the reports of Captain Francis Leate, of H.M.S. Dundee, praises the ability and sound judgment they displayed in rounding up and destroying the raider. , me Leopard had a heavy torpedo armament, and the intention of her commander was to manoeuvre during chase and boarding so as to torpedo both the Acmllesand Dundee. The commander or the Dundee, however, manoeuvred in such a way that for five or six minutes lie was able to pour in a heavy fire at a range of 1000 yards before the raider could bring a gun to bear. The Achilles gave the coup de grace, and the raider was sunk with all hands Unhappily a boarding' party from the Dundee had rowed over to the Leopard and were forced on board. This party, consisting of Lieutenant F. H. Lawson it.in.it. f and five seamen, took the extreme nsk-of a boarding operation under the conditions .prevailing, and went down with the raider.
