At a special meeting of the Ashburfcon board of the Returned Soldiers' Asso^ ciation.tho question of land and houses for returned soldiers was dealt with at considerable length. The chairman (%r E. H: Orr), stated that the Government would advance up to £2500 for the freehold purchase of land and £250 for buildings. It was decided to inform headquarters that at present there was no land in Canterbury open for soldier settlement. It was stated that four properties had been 'bought in the Ashburton district, one at Eiffelton, one at and tv q others at Lowcliffe and Irhnds respectively, but even when these blocks were cut up there would still be a shortage of land for soldier settlement.
