NELSON AMATEOR SWIMMING CLUB.

SUCCESSFUL SPORTS MEETING.

During the war the 'JNelson Amateur Swimming Club was compelled, in common with other sports'bodies, to suspend its operations owing to the large number of members who went on active service. -Now that hostilities have ceased and' there is not the call for youths to go into camp^ the club has been resuscitated, and the first sports meeting since war broke out took place at Port Nelson on Saturday afternoon. The gathering proved .a great sxiccess. ■There was-a large attendance of the public, the weather conditions were perfect, entries were good, and ■competition was keen. . The events were got off without delay, and the meeting was concluded shortly1 before 5 o'clocS, the public leaving well satisfied with their afternoon's sport. The 12* th Eegiment Band was in attendance, and played a number of selections. The cup presented by Mr C. B. Pharazyn for' the most points in the Centre Championship events was won by W. Reed. The Schools Championship- events foiv girls and boys attracted considerable interest, and^the. competitors swam with much promise. Only the girls' 25 yards,! 50-yards/and 75 yards, and the boys' 501 yards and 100 yards were competed for j on Saturday; the remainder of the championship events will bo swum dur- ] ing the week. Quite a number of returned soldiers competed during the afternoon, and showed that they had lost none of their prowess by their war service. Owing to the illness of Mr JR.. ■ Gilbert, the duties of the lion, secretary fell to Mr G. Hogg, who, assisted by Mr G. Bush, was responsible for'the arrangements.,' and much of the success ctf the meeting was due to their efforts. The other officials were: Judges, Messrs X S. Cresswell, J. H. Finney, and J. G. McKay-; starter, Mr G. Hogg; timekeeper, Mr A. G. Shrimpton; call stewards, Messrs P. McCabe and V. Condell. Appended are the resutls: —
