HOW SERGEANT LAURENT WON THE V.C.

Wellington, Feb. 22. The following particulars in connection with the acts of gallantry, for which Sergeant Harry John Laurent was awarded tho Victoria Cross have 'been forwarded to Base Records from overseas: —He -was awarded the Victoria Cross for acts of conspicuous bravery, skill, and enterprise, when, during an attack, he was detailed to exploit an initial success and keep in touch with, the enemy. With a party of twelve, he located enemj support lines, which; were very strongly heia, ahH at once charged the position, followed by his men, and completely disorganised the enemy by his sudden onslaught. In. hand-to-hand fighting which, ensued, h§ showed great resourcefulness in controlling and encouraging his. men. Thirty of the enemy having been killed, the remainder surrendered, ,a total of one officer asd 111 ranks in all. The success of this daring' venture, which caused his party four casualties only, *vas due to his gallantry and enterprise.
