GROWTH

WAGES AND PROFITS

•-( — (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

London, Feb. 20

The House of Lords resumed th« Late on the industrial unrest.

Lord Levorhulmo declared that 'Bolshevism was not a dec-n-rooted emotion in this country ; but was carried on by men who resisted military service, and who h.ad proved bad citizens in Avar time. There was no need for labour or indust; in! unrest to be always with us if we were to he a healthy community, as it was merely an expression of the workers' aspirations lifting them to higher tL'ings. Workers' wages during the wav had risen iive times more than the employers' profits. If the wages increase had been on a pro rata basis- it would have been under ten shillings weekly.

Lord Crawford, replying on behalf of the Government, declared that industry 1 was stagnant, alarmed, and nervous. ;We must strain every nerve to re-estafb-lish the export trade. The debate was adjourned.
