REPUBLICAN CRITICISM OF PRESIDENT WILSON.

A CHAMPION IN THE SENATE

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

Washington, Jan. 2

Senator Lewis1, in the Senate, charged the Republicans with conspiring to discredit President Wilson in Europe, and giving, the impression that he did not represent the American people. The President was -within his rights. There was no law or custom by which the President was under an obligation or answerable to Congress. What he was now doing was as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armies. Such capacity entitled him to make certain agreements, but not treaties. Senator Lewis urged the Senate to support the President now on foreign soil contesting for the supremacy of the United States.
