FIGHTING AT LAFFAUX.

ADVANCE OF MANGIN'S ARMY

A DETERMINED RESISTANCE

(Reuters Telegrams.)

. London, Sept. 17. Renter's correspondent at French Headquarters, writing on September 13th, states:—On the plateau east of Laffaux Mill, General Mangiri attacked this morning in the direction of Angegardieu, on the Soissons-Manbeuge road and Colombe farm near Jouy.

He advanced one kilometre on a front of four kilometres, captiying several positions in the valley separating Sancy from the plateau. Despite machine guns and artillery sweeping the plateau find the vigorous counter-at-tacks, the French maintained themselves in the captured positions.

The chief feature of the day's fighting was the-capture of.numerous subterranean passages dug -under.the plateau, in which the Germans pu,t up a desperate and furious resistance. They lost most heavily.
