NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held yesterday. Messrs. Fi W. Smith, W. I Lock, E. E. Boyes, E. J. Scantlebury, W. C. Baigent, T. Symes, A. C. Cotterell, and D. J. Williams.

ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN

It being the annual meeting, the -.secretary took the chair and called'for nominations' for the position of chairman for the ensuing year. Mr.' Boyes proposed that Mr. Lock be elected to the position. He said the time had come whon a town member .should be chairman. Mr. Smith, on taking the chair, expressed his regret that the late chairiman (Mr. Gothard) had found it neces[|sary through ill-health to retire, and said his services had been valuable, especially in regard to West Coast matters and technical education. He thanked members for his-,election, but said it was fOrily a mattei* of chance. It would be his duty to do his best for the Board, assisted by the members. They ffere working under difficulties owing to their finance being insufficient for all needs, and the high cost of material, etc. In the circumstances they could hardly expect much greater consideration from the Government, and other boards were in the same position. The first duty was to win the war, and then they should see that every child had an opportunity to secure the best education. He welcomed Mr. Cotterell to the Board.

Mr. Cotterell thanked the members : for his welcome, and said he had always taken an interest, in educational matA ters.
