G, 7.25 p.m.) i London, Sept. 5. j L Mr Compers, addressing %he Trade ilittion Congress, said:—''America's mesj sage to Britain and the Allies is, We ; men of the Western democracy are ; coming five million strong." , Mr Gompers continued: "I have not .always agreed wil.li the policy of Bri- . tish Governments, especially regarding ( 'the Boer War and towards Ireland, but .; I rejoice that the old Britain is -not the , Britain of to-day. You gave the Boers , full self-government, and now they are , giving their lives fighting for the Mo- : ther Country. I would not prolong this war one minute longer than is necessary, hut I am not willing to shorten it !by one hour if that meant that themilijtary machine would remain to cause furither wars."
