TORRENTIAL RAIN.
SLIPS ON THE WAKAPUAKA ROAD.
PEDESTRIANS INCONVENIENCED
Thursday night's heavy downpour of rain caused a number of slips on the Wakapuaka road, beyond the Cemetery. In places the surface of the roads leading to the residences on the hillside were washed right across the mam road into the sea, leaving boulder strewn channels. The streams in the vicinity were converted into raging torrents', and the opinion of residents in theloeality was that a. cloudburst had occurred. Near the effcy boundary there was a slr£ under a. house built on the hillside, and occupied by Mr. J. Fmgland, some of the piles bein«- exposed. Shrubs growing alongside the house were also washed away. The inundation caused by the bursting of the vent in the Waimea street sewer quickly subsided, and the conditions yesterday morning were normal. Blocked gratings caused the footpaths in some parts of the city to be ternporanly submerged, and pedestrians wending their way homewards late on Thursday night after the'gas lamps had been extinguished;Vreoeived. some unpleasant surprises',%fieri they suddenly plunged into water "several inches: dep.
