TASMAN-MAPUA ROAD.

DEPUTATION TO COUNTY COUNCIL

1 A deputation consisting of Messrs E. j E. Nottage and J "Allen waited upon ; the Waimca County Council jcsterday I in regard to 'blinding the Tasman-Mapua i rop<l, which has been heavily metalled. i Mr. Nottage urged that something ■should be done to make the road usable for heavy traffic before the busy season : commences. He said they represented j. the Nelson Go-operative Fruit Company, : Which' intended to erect cool stores at Mapua. This'would mean that large quantities of fruit woiild ' have to. be carted over the road iron*. Tasman. It had. been suggested that if the road was blinded with "'clay.,■ .it could be made! usable for motor traffic. Mr Alien also stressed the \xrgency of j the.matter, adding that:it .was expected ! that from 350 to 4CO cases of fruit per | day would be carried over the road during the season. It was also intended to erect ar. evaporating plant'at'Tasman, which would mean the carting of largt quantities?; of fruib from Bronte, M&hann and Mapua districts to Tasman. The question .of. cost was discussed, and in reply to Cr Everett the engineer estimated that it would cost £250 to! blind the whole length, of thp road with i clay. Cr. 'Everett asked if the deputation had considered the- question of horse J .traffic. He thought an extra horse in' ;an express would fee able to cart the ■ fruit over the present metalled road. j Mr Nottage said the question of horse I ! traction had been considered, but ho ; had never known heavy traffic over a' . new road to improve it. If the road : was not attended to it would soon .: be like the Moutere Bluffs road As to ■ the estimate of £250, he thought if the blinding was done judiciously,, it, would cost considerably less. Cr. He'wetson said the road could not' be made a motor road, and he moved .that it be an instruction to the En- : gineer to have the worst portions of tJie gravelling between the Ruby Bay homestead and Mapua blinded with clay and the nits raked in. Seconded by Cr. Allport, who suggested that the Engineer should be . given discretion as to the worst- porj tions. I The motion was earrieu.
