V.M.C.A. WAR WORK.

MEETING TO-NIGHT.

In the City Council Chambers this evening a meeting will be held to heat' addresses by Mr W. H. George, of Wellington (commissioner), and Air A. Varney (national secretary) on the war worVof the Young "Men\s Christian Association. The meeting has l)een convened by the Mayor (Mr \Y. W. Snodgrass) and a largo ami representative attendance is expected. ~ Mr George, who is a prominent business man, has for many years taken a deep and personal interest in theV.M.C.A. He is a member of the exejciitive of the National* Committee, fie body controlling the funds raised in New Zealand for soldiers, and lie has at his own expense visited Egypt to see exactly how the money has been spent; | and to inquire as to future needs. Mr j Varney has spent a considerable time jin France and England, and Nelsonians know from past experience that he has a very interesting story to tell. In addition to' hearing about the work, the meeting is also for the purpose of furthering the interests of the- fund in. Nelson.

A well attended and very successful meeting was held in the Oddfellows'' Hall. Wakeficld, on Saturday evening.; The chair was occupied by Mr Ivo Tunnicliffe, and the speakers were Messrs George and Varney and Mr F. Milner < Waitaki), who is a member of the general council of the V.M.C.A. Those present were greatly interested in the addresses that were given, and much pleased with the first-hand accounts ot what the V.M.C.A. is doing for our soldiers at the front. A strong committee was set up to further the objects of the. meeting, with Mr F. Coleman as chairnian and Miss Bird as secretary. Judging from xhe enthusiasm displayed, Wakefield's response to the appeal that is now being made will be as hearty as it has been to others of a like character.

Messrs George and Varney will attend a meeting at the Council Chambers, ltichmond, this afternoon. .Residents of the borough and the surrounding districts are invited by the Mayor (Mr W. E. Wilkes) to be present.
