SKETCH. EXHIBITION.

SUTER AIM' SOCII'TTY

Landscape sketches form by far the, greater part oi' tile oxtubition of pictures at the Suter Art Gallery, whieli was well attended yesterday attemoon by general consent those shown by Alisk M. O. iStoddart, oi CJiristchurch, v\ere voted to he entirely wormy oi' the pJaco of honour Avhich they were given. They represent many abpe'ets ul iNew Zealand scenery, from* its leinotest mountains and valleys, whore man cannot changeauylhing, to paits ot t!ie country and the coasts whore his roads, Inuldings, plantations, at.d other woriis supply tho element of human interest, lnc artist's iioo, vonlidenl motliod repays study, and is v,oll exempliiied in "Cliil's, Simmer," "In the Utira,'' "Sumner Whari'," and a sunny CJiristchureh study of troes overhanging a fence, to mention only a few out of some sixty. Miss Stoddart catches ihe spirit dnd atmosphere' of the varied scenes which she depicts, and it is' pleasant to notice that si)o has not been itlle — xi she can ever' be idle—during her pre^nt visit to Nelson, which, b,y tlie way, nas supplied local workers'with much encouragement and inspiration. The group oi" works by JM. Anidt (Mrs Leo. Manoy, of Motueka) is noteworthy for its examples of ; ngure drawnig. In "Dusk," an interior, done m tempera, tlie woman's dress is finely rendered. A'strong s-.tudy from life of a man's head was exhibited at the Paris Salon. Pastels, including a bab\;s:jiead,. aiici etchings, complete Mrs 'Manoy's extremely interesting contribution. Those who know their Wellington must be'satisfied with Miss D. K. 'Kichmond'.s •water colour of a part of that hrcc/.y city over which can be seen the harbour and the hills that bound it to the north. Tlie skill of Mr Owen Merton, a •successful Christehurch artist, who jiist now-is in Ainc-rica, is .shown in three admirable sketches. He painted in France, and especially in the Pyrenees, with Mr C. Y. Fell, of this'city, many specimens of whose taste and industry are to be seen on the screens .and one of tlie walk of the gallery. i\lr .Fell's sketches' and impressions tell of the good use lie made ,of his opportunities during his'recent'visit to Europe, and he is' moreover entitled to full credit for emphasising the beauties that abound in and near Nelson. He has, for. instance, made a capital picture oi' the Maitai quarry, with some of the famous1 poplars occupying part of tlie rorogroimd. The sterling work of Mr J. 11. Nicholson is also to the fore, and, as an example of it, a view of Flaxmore from the Wakapuaka road may bei commended to notice? Of the examples of Mrs J. Topliss's sound style, "Evening," a study of an old, " weathered | building, is excellent in unity and feel-1 ing. She. also has a picture of tiie; Cathedral, with its SDire. There is faithfulness in Mr F/F. C. Huddle- \ ston'«^ water colours, and his view or' Dunne's Hole, Maitai river, in midsummer, with boys bathing, is one o? the few oil paintings entered. The water colour drawings of New Zealand native flowers and berries by Miss Nina Jones justly receive everyone's praise, and she also furnishes evidence that she is able again to undertake outdoor work. Miss Jiarnicoat, of Wellington, who is here with Miss Stoddart, paints (irmly, and she achieves success in her sketch "From Hills near I'etone." Miss i). A. Sadd is one of the loyal band of JSelsonians who, as the screens testify, find ample use for their brush in tneir own city. Mrs X G. -Harris, an old exhibitor, again demonstrates her abilI ity a<; a (lower painter. West Coast I and Motueka scenes by Mr H. Scott are marked by vigour.' The forceful studies of his native Cornish coast by Sergeant Sylvester Johns, of the Now Zealanci Expeditionary Force, attract a good deal of notice. Other exhibitors include Messrs N. L. Buchanan (who has a coviple of clever little caricatures among his entries), F. V. Knapp, H. Harrison, W. T. Brundell, J. Berger, and J. Blair. The exhibition is under ■the auspices of the Suter Art Society and the Bisho]xlalo Sketching Club, and part _of the proceeds will be handed to the .Red Cross Fund, in response to requests, it has been decided to continue tiie show this afternoon from 2.30.
