REQUEST REFUSED.
(From "The Colonist," August 11th.)
The Minister of Marine has forwarded to Mr T. A. H. Field, :M.P., his reply to the request by tho. Nelson Chamber of Commerce for the extension of the Nelson river limits. He states that, having gone very carefully into the matter, he regretted that he could not see his way to make any extension in tho present ' limits! The Minister adds: "The certificates which masters and engineers cf vessels plying within extended river limits are required v to hold arc of a very low grade, and do not qualify their holders'to have charge of vessels plying outside partially smooth water as would be tho case if the extension to the Nelson limits were made as asked for. Tho examination for a sea-going oil engineer's certificate for eea-going vessels, which is the certificate required by vessels trading between Nelson and Puponga, and having engines up to 60 h.p., is not a difficult one, and is sueh1 that men who are fit to be engineers of these vessels should be able to pass." Mr Field forwarded the letter to Mr O. R. Fell, president of tho Nelson Chamber of Commerce.
