THE CENTRAL POWERS

SPEECH'BY THE CHANCELLOR.

REVOLUTION TALK DENOUNCED,

CENTRAL ALLIANCE STILL

UNITED.,

REFUSAL TO ANNOUNCE WAR

AIMS

(Reuters Telegrams.)

(Received May 16, 6.40 p.m.) Amsterdam, May 15. Dr. yon Bethmann Hollweg, speaking in the Reichstag, affirmed that Germany had had no difference with her Allies regarding the peace question. He perfectly understood the passionate interest taken in the German aims, but the only guiding line -for the Chancellor was an early and' satisfactory conclusion of the war. He could say nothing beyond that. He denounced the Socialist talk of a revolution. The nation were firmly arrayed around the Kaiser, whom they-trusted, and wbo trusted them. He referred to the unparalleled battles of the past month. lEven -to-day the English and French showed no readiness1 for peace, and the most recent utterances from London declared that the war aims announced ■for two years were unaltered. ; .

Dr. yon Bethmann Hollweg rejected the idea of arriving at peace by announcing Germany's willingness to renounce her success. He equally declined to set forth a programme of conquest. The latter would help as little as the former to win a victory that would end the war.
