In the House of Commons, Colonel Churchill complained that Mr Asquith had not reviewed the military situation.
Mr Lloyd George replied: You cannot review the military prospects in the middle of a battle. The prospects are good. The generals are more than satisfied with, the progress and proud of the valour of the men. Great as were the British infantry in former days they were never greater than now. One thrills with pride to belong to the same race as the citizen army which is hurling back the most formidable foes. Whatever happens in this battle I am confident that victory is assured. I feel beyond everything confident, because numbers and all other resources are on our side, and our soldiers have been proved. British resourcefulness and intelligence is going to snatch victory in a few months over what appeared at one time an invincible military Power
