VERDUN.

ENEMY REPULSED AT AVOCOURT

FRENCH COUP DE MAIN AT MORT

HOMME.

RE-ESTABLISHED AT THIAU-

MONT.

London, July 2.

A communique says that the Germans east of Avocourt Wood penetrated our advanced elements. Our counterattack completely repulsed them.

We effected a coup de main on the eastern slopes of the Mort Homme.

The enemy irade several attacks on Thiaumont works in which we are established. We easily repulsed a strong party of Germans hurled at our first line. They were dispersed, suffering heavy losses.

Over 5000 unwounded prisoners were captured.
