•Greyniouth, April 14. The West Coast timber industry is seriously hampered by the shortage oi: shipping. Somo thousniuls or pounds worth of timber is on the slvids, but millers are unable to fulfil orders owing to the scarcity of ships. The Union Company explains -that it cannot fiulfil engagements, •as its fleet has 'wen virtually commandeered for national put-
poses. At a meeting of the Chamber oi: Commerce a resolution was passed to approach the Government to see if the position can !be ameliorated for _ the release of ships. If immediate relief is pot forthcoming all the mills will closo down at an early date.
