TEMPORARY FAILURE OF GAS SUPPLY.

The Gas Engineer reported that, ou Monday last considerable, inconvenience was caused.to g»s consumers throughout the city through the quality of che gas being below the usual standard. The trouble originated in the retoichouse., and was due to the stoker m charge of the shift from 12 p.m. to 8 a.m. not charging sufficient retorts witfi coal to maintain a good quality gas. When the new holder is in action the possibility of a recurrence of the tz-oublo will be very remote. The firebrick goods for renewing the defective retorts at the works should be to hand early nnxt week when the work of rebuilding tho retort beds will be commenced.

GENERAL

The Abattoir Manager reported thai during the fortnight ended January 25th the following stock were slaughtered:—Cattle 59, calves 12 3 sheep 557, lambs 230, pigs 25 ;■ total 883. Condemned during the period, two sheep. The matter of improving, .the conveniences at Tahuna was referred to tho Works Committee.

Cr. Moffatt drew attention to complaints regarding the system of rendering gas accounts.

The Mayor said the system had not been changed, but some delay in reading meters and rendering accounts had been caused through recent disorganisation of the staff owing to changes.''Tha difficulty had only occurred once, and was not likely to happen again. Cr. Webley moved that the Finance Committee take into consideration the question of reducing the price of gks for power and heating' purposes, tie Gas Engineer to report. He thought the present would be an opportune time to go into the matter, with a viev: to extending the use of gas for poAver avid heating purposes. The motion was seconded by Cr. Moffatt.

Cr. Piper said they shoxild not think of reducing the price of gas until tho new gasholder was finished.

On the motion of the Mayor the City Engineer was instructed to report oil the cost of asphalting Normanby bridge and of painting and repairing all the bridges. %

The City Engineer was also directed to give attention to various Avorks required in Toi Toi and Washington VfiJUey_s.' ... The Council then rose.
