In Artois an action^ was conducted yesterday against Allie.s' positions east of Nouville St. Vaasti. It completelyfailed. It was resumed at the end of the day on a greater scale, after a fresh series/of mine explosions accompanied by a very violent bombardment. The German^ attacked on a, front of about 1500 metres in the laaigle formed by the road from Arras to Lens and the road from Neuville St. Vaast to Thdus. The enemy succeeded at two points where the" French firing trench was overthrown by explosions. The enemy occupied craters, most off which wero retaken almost immediately. j In the Vosges the French effectively .bombarded enemy;works at Bandesapt.
