HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.
The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, January 22nd. (Note: Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot): — Meat: The market is quiet; small business is doing owing to - a continued large supply of all descriptions of homekilled selling at poor prices at present. .Prices for frozen meat are firmer owing to a short supply. Mutton: Canterbury 7jd for all weights, second grade 7-Jd; Other brands, than Canterbury, 7-Jd for best quality, ordinary quality 7|d.
Beef: There is no New Zealand beef of any description at the market. Chilled hinds 7id, fores sfd. Butter: The. market is quiet at the decline. Danish, 156s to 160s per cwt. New Zealand: The spot market is bare owing to slow delivery from the docks. There is a good demand for any butter available at 144s to 1465, and up to 148s; unsalted 156s to 160s, fine 140s to 1425. Australian, 140s to 1465. Siberian, 124s to 130s. lArgentine, 138s to 1425.
Cheese: The market is firm, and prices continue to advance. Canadian, -white and coloured, 99s to 100s. New Zealand, white and coloured, 935. United States, Cheddar shapes, 96s to 98s. English Cheddar, 104s to 106s; Cheshire, 114s to 118s. Hemp: The market is very firm, and is greatly affected by reports of freight shortage. The market is excited, and accurate quotations cannot be given. , Quotations'are nominal. New Zealand good-fair, per ton, on spot, £45; fair £43. Manila, new graded fair £55; coarse, £49. January to March shipment: New Zealand, gooc!-fair, £44: fair, £42. Tow. —Second grade, £.25.. The output from Manila for the week was 16,000 bales.
Wheat: The market is steady, and prices are woll maintained. Them is a good demand for forward delivery. Canadian, on spot, per quarter,' 68s'; January to March shipment, 675. Australian, January to March shipment, steamer 65s 6d, sailer 645. j , Oats: The market, is quiet; small business is doing. Argentine, on spot, 31s 6d; January to March shipment, 34s (on account of freight scarcity). Hops: The market is steady, with an imnrovec! demand.
