TELEGRAPH REVENUE.
EFFECT OF INCREASED RATES
[United Press Association.]
Christcfrurch Jan. 5. As an indication of the manner in which, the increased charges on telegrams had affected the revenue, Sir Joseph Ward. stated tdat the increased revenue from ordinary telegrams in No\ rember last was £3567, and from all telegrams £5124. The gross revenue in November, 1914). was £36,172, and in November, 1915, £41,----■175, net revenue, £26,504 and £31,628 respectively. Press messages sent in November, 1914, totalled 39,059, and in November, 1915, 26,025, a decrease of 13,034. The increased revenue m November last oiu, fchese messages was £143. This indicated that the newspapers, naturally and rightly, as he thought, had not availed themselves of the wires to the same extent as they had prior to the imposition «>f the increased rates. He was disposed to think the increased rates under Hie various headings in the Telegraph Department could rot make the "department self-supporting, and he would be. . agreeably surprised if the department | was able, to provide out of revenue for • the expenditure. .It would be necessary to wait a few months before tho actual position was known.
