FLOWER SHOW AND SALE OF

WORK,

(From "Th© Colonist," Sept.. 16;): . The,annual bulb show and sale of work in connection with the Presbyterian Church was opened in the Presbytenan Church Hall by the Mayor (Mr C. J. Harley) yesterday afternoon. This year the entries for all classes, particularly daffodils, are strong, and the blooms are quite equal in quality to those displayed at the Horticultural Society's show last week. The blooms are shown on raised tiers, which con-; siderafrly enhances the general effect. , Ihere are also fine displays of cut flowers and pot plants. Mr"A. E. Tasker has provided a very fine show of daffodils and hyacinths/ which are being sold for the Daffodil Day Fund. All the daffodils in the competitive classes are to be disposed of tp-niglit for the benefit of th© same fund. Ln addition to the flower show, the ladies of the Guild have provided several well-laden stalls, and the goods yesterday found a ready sale. ! Tho stall-holders are:— Work stall: Mesdames Widdowson, Johnston, and Thompson. Sweet Stall: Mesdames Robertson (2) and Stewart. Produce stall: Mesdames MacKenzie, Neilson, Michie, and Barltrop. In the evening a most enjoyable concert was given under the direction of Mr S. Mayson. The programme included ..tho following items :—Glee, "Let tho hills resound"; girls', unison song, "The River"; duet, "I would that my love," Missea Green and Oldershaw; song, "Keep pegging away," Miss Gilbert; item by quartette party (encored) ;, song, "'The anchors weighed/ Mr E. Richards (encored) ; double quartette, "Stars-of the summer night," Misses Green and Oldershaw, Messrs Taylor, Richards, Cooke, and Glover; song by boys and girls, "Johnny Schnober" (encored/; quartette, where my love lies dreaming, 1' Mesßrs Taylor (2), Tasker, and Glover (enoored). Enjoyable numbers were also played by Miss Joyce's orchestra. Special mention may t© made of the singing of the quartette party, and or tho part, songs and choruses yiven by tho choir and friends. The children ni their action songs showed that they had , been carefully trained, and their voices; were very sweet. Another concert will b e given this evening. The champion bloom of the show, a chalice cup, Berrfhdino, was ehown by Mr A. E. Tasker; and the s.econd champion, a trumpet, Lord Roberts, by Mrs Wastr.ey.

The Presbyterian flower show and sale of work was well attended yesterday. Mi- A, Gould conducted an auction sale of blooms during the evening, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the Daffodil Day fund for ! Christmas presents to the Nelson boys .at the front. The thanks of the congregation are due tx> all those x who kindly contributed to the musical programmes on both evenings, each item being very much appreciated by all present. The programme yesterday even-! ing had to be curtailed owing to the auction sale. It included the following numbers:—Chorus by chW and friends, "Hail, Smiling Morn"; two pieces played by Miss Joyce's orchestra; song," Mr E. Richards (encored); trio, Messrs Taylor (2) and Glover (encored); action songs by boys and girls.
