CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR MEN IN

THE TRENCHES.

That- the scheme for providing the Nelson men in the trenches with Christmas gifts was a ploasmg idea to the people of Nelson was shown by their generosity on the recenfc Daffodil Day, when sucn an abundance of flowers was given that a sum of £260 was realised by their sale. This amount was to be expended in Christmas gifts, and was supplemented by donations for the same purpose from private people, with j the result that a huge consignment of Christmas gift goods has been forwarded to Nelson men at the front. For several days last week the Lady Liverpool Fund depot was a oentre of interest while the work of sorting and packing was carried on-under the supervision of Mrs Lock. For the actual work of packing the committee are indebted to Messrs C. Kenning, J. Simpson, R. Stiles, Pogson, KeHing, Crawford. Wood, W. W, Snodgrass, Buxton and Co., and others, while special thanks are due to the railway wharf employees and the officers and men of'the steamer Kaitoa, who gave their services, aiter the usual hours. A number of storekeepers supplied cases, and the; Anchor Company, as on several previous occasions, shipped the goods free of charge. The full consignment comprises 75 cases, as ..follows :—

17 cases addressed parcels, for mdi vidual men.

2 eases unaddressed parcels, for men who have no relatives in this district. 13 cases condensed milk.: 25 cases Kirkpatrick's plum pu<S dings. ; 2 cases Gear Meat Extract. 5 capes Griffin's chocolates 1 case Griffin's sweets. 1 case from Stoke Training Farm. 1 case sweets and oake, 3 cases cake.

In nddition to these-goods £G0 wortir of tobacco, cigarettes, and matches has been sent through the "Mail" Tobacco Fund and 500 leather jackets have been sent through the Chnstchurch j committee for the use of our Nelson men. Contributions for the gift cases were received from all paats of the district —from Havelock on the one side and Murchison and Owen Junction on the other—while some came from as far as Kaikoura. . . Since the date fixed for reeemng parcels for enclosure a number have feeen received by Mrs Lock. These wi.l go forward with the usual girt goods of socks, writing material, etc., whicu the committee expect to pack &b t£« end of the .Month,-t'O be sent away m November. •
