WOMEN'S NATIONAL RESERVE.

A well-attended and enthusiastic n.eeting was held in.-, the Wood Sunday School iast night in connection with the Women's National Reserve movement.

Mrs W. Lock presided, sand u in an address explained the objects of the reserve. She pointed to the way in which the women of England had risen to tho occasion, and adapted themselves to fill vaearcies caused by men going to the front. She urged women to take up the- occupations for which they were most fitted, so that .they might be of the greatest possible use to their country when needed. Mrs C. Graham addressed the meeting, and said the movement would not ho a means of "putting cheap labour on tho market. Iti was not the intention of the Reserve to urge men to enlist. The object of the Reserve ,was not to give military training, but to compile a register of the qualifications for service "of the women of tho district. Mrs Buchanan urged all, both young and old, to enrol and do their best to help their *< country. She mentioned ways in which women cculd do useful

work. Before the meeting concluded Mrs Lock said that the second hospital ship which was to be sent from Now Zealand would carry from our shores a lvumber of our nurses. In view of the- shortage in the nursing staff of the Dominion that would probably result, sho thought some scheme should be set on foot .whereby a number of joung women could receive hospital training. It was proposed by Mrs (Dr.) Lucas, secoi-ded by Mrs Sidford, and carried, that Mesdames Graham and Buchanan wait upon the Nelson Hospital and Oaritable Aid Board at its next meetin" and 'ask it to give consideration to the suggestion and facilities for putting it into operation, so that young women might be fitted to,'take up nursing work if called upon. The enrolments alter the meeting wero most satisfactory. Particulars of a series of meetings to bo held next week are advertised.
