NELSON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

BULB SHOW.

/From "The -Colonist/* Sept, 9.)

The arrangement between the' Horticultural Society and Mr H. Saunders, proprietor of the Empire Theatre, to hold the society's shows at the Empire Theatre has by, yesterday's experience proved to be a. step in the right direction. The space allotted for the display of blooms, etc., in the large marquee at the east side of the theatre, and in the body of the building, proved adequate to tho occasion, and in the important matters of cleanliness and light a vast improvement on the arrangements possible in the Dnllhall was shown. At night this was specially manifest, the electric light installation being a great factor in the successful display of the blooms in the evening. At intervals during the afternoon and evening Mr Saunders screened a programme of pictures, including the line tilin, to which reference has already been mode, "The Fruit Industry in Now Zealand," and "The Sign of' the Cioss." By the arrangements made, patrons and members of the Horticultural Show had a programme of pictures added to tho attraction of the floral display, and patrons of the pictures had the opportunity of viewing the flower show.. .

The bulb show is in itself a. very great attraction, beiru; on the whole the "best yet held under the auspices of the f.ieit'ty. a'he narcissi blooms, taken as a whole, are, in the opinion of tho judge, ii distinct advance upon those extabit<ed the year previous. Although individual blooms as good as those now on exhibition had been, shown before, ihe all-round quality has reached a lusher standard, and there is increasing evidence of good culture and the use of special fertilisers. Tho hyacinths are vcrv fine, and quite the best exhibited at any show conducted by the present society. The cyclamens also show an advance in quality, nothing as good being exhibited at previous shows. The cinerarias make a good display, but hardk oomo up to the standard of those shown by the late Mr Goo. Chapman. Tho polyanthus and primrose section shows the advance that is being made an- tho development at* 1, culture oi these favourite spring flowers. Ihe bloom.? exhibited show a. distinct improvement. , The (> oi champion trumpet narci«s" bloom was awarded to a very fine specimen of King Alfred grown by Mr \ E. Tasker. In the same class a specimen of Peter Barr exhibited oy Mr lS Ren wick attracted much attontaon. introduced only half a decade ago, the jrreat raiser bestowed his own name on This variety, v Jiich came on the market at -CSO per bulb. It is a beautiful eros m or sulphur variety, combining sub tance • and delicacy, and is bound to )c-comt a great favourite. . . '< he champion Chalice Cup narcissi bl. om is possessed by Mr G M. Rout, a well-grown, beautifully coloured specinen of Gloria M.undi. In the-same class a-bloom that commanded attention is a Copeland Leedsn seedling exhibited by Mr A. E. Tas*kor. "A distinctive feature ot this "Moom is a faint, though distinct, pink tint on the edging or tho cu>>Amon<T the specimens and displays for exhibition only were the followingMr Gee. F. Dodds exhibited a large stand of pot plants and ferns, the display being a very fin^ one, and including some high quality blooms. Dr. Beit's oansies, from a strain that lie is establishing ,gained commendation from the experts and included sorao very fine blooms. Dr. Barr exhibited a specimen, in bloom of a novelty in the form of the down Imperial Lily (Fretillaxia Im.■[•.eriaiis). Harley) formall v opened the show during the afteraiorm, "remarking upon the general excellence- of the exhibits and tho improved conditions under which tJie show was held, due to the assistance of Mr Sounders whose loyal' and patriotic spirit he referred to as being displayed in many ways. . Mrs Harley, at the conclusion of the Mayor1 s remarks, was presented with ?. beautiful bouquet, by Mrs Mollei, wife of The president of the Rorticul±v.rn\ Society. Tn conjunction with the show, the laid ie.-. of tho Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Ft-nd Committee had various stalls on behalf of the funds, the takings at which were: Produce stall £9 11s 8d ; sweet stall £14 8s 3d. tea kiosk £7 16s 9d.
