LIVERPOOL CAMP INQUIRY.

MEDICAL OFFICER'S EVIDENCE

(Received July 20, 9.55 p.m.)

Sydney, July 20

At the Liverpool camp inquiry Dr. Schlink, who was in charge of the hospital, gave evidence that from the outset ho advocated that the hospital should be removed to higher ground and better accommodation provided. From January 19th to yesterday there were 4000 admissions, or at the. rate of 8000 a year. In June alone there were 946 admissions. The death rate in the field hospital was .3 per cent, tip to July Ist. The number of men who had appeared this year on sick parade was 30,000. Drink was the cause of a great deal of the illness, and the class of drink distributed to the troops was awful.

Dr. Schlink's counsel asked for a subpoena for Senator Milieu, with the object of finding out the source of a charge of disloyalty alleged to have been made against Dr. Schlink.

Mr. Justice Rich pointed out that Dr Schlink was not charged with disloyalty, but only with having a German name and German sympathies.

Dr. Schlink passionately pretested against the cruelty of being accused of a sympathy lie did not possess. His name had beeii sullied and his professional honour trampled upon. He added: "I come here as an Australian."

Mr. Justice Rich assured him that there was no suggestion against his professional honour.
