OBITUARY.

MR CHARLES McGEE.

There, passed away :ti. Wolsou on .Monday a very old settlor in the person of Mr Oliarlos McGoo, at the ripe old nge of 93 years. The deceased, who was horis at Hyde, Cheshire on September 20th, 1822, came to Now Zealand with his parent*. th & late Mr and Mrs Alexander McGee, in the ship Martha Hidgway, arriving in iNelson in February, 1842. On the voyage out an Oddfellows' Lodge- was formed on the vessel, and at the first mooting I held ;n Nvison the deceased was among! the. members initiated. He had re-j rnair.od ;i member of tbci Order ever? .since, and in the early days was a pillar of the lodge. He wan .. probably one of the o'desfc Oddfellows in New Zealand. The deceased experienced all the vicissitudes of the. early .settlers, and at tl>e time of the Maori troubles was one of the pickets on the Church Hill, whero the residents assembled nightly in anticipation of an attack by tlio Natives. The late Mx McGee was a shoemaker by trade, but subsequently took up hotel-keeping, and was fov many years landloid of the Nelsoa Hotel. Ho retired from business about thirty years ago, and had since been living iii retirement. The deceased, who ivas married three times, had three children by his first wife —Mrs Fletcher (Melbourne), Mr W. G. McGeo (Nelson), and Mr Alex. MeG-ec (Wellington) —and nine children by. his second wife, four of whom survive, \iz., Mill. McGec (Melbourne), Mrs Simnkiiv, (Wellington), Mr Charles McOe *(Nel.son), and Mrs J. Green iFokororo). Ho also leaves 2S grandchildren and 13 great-grandch'ldien. The remains of the deceased will be intoned in the Trafalgar street Cemetery to-morrow nitiernoon.
