BUFFALOES IN WARFARE.

STAMPEDED IN MINED GROUND

.(Received June 10, 11.20 jD.m.)

London, Jiine 10.

Mr Martin Donohoe, who is in Northern Italy, states that the use of wild buffaloes in breaking down Austrian entanglements was not an isolated incident. The Italians have' thousands of savage animals at their disposal.

They are also used 'for exploding mines in the passes giving entrance to the Trentino. Exploding bombs are sometimes used to stampede the beasts, but usually a serum i>s injected which rouses the buffaloes to a terrifying pitch of fury.

Sometimes fifty or a hundred beasts are released at a time, and* as they rush through the pass terrific explos-

ions occur. The buffaloes are blown to pieces, and the troops are able to traverse the ground in safety. They afterwards eat -the flesh.
